Denim Jeans

Jeans - Who Loves Ya Baby?

Jeans are a universal favorite. There is, perhaps, no other dress which is more popular than jeans.

This favorite apparel was actually invented in the nineteenth century to cater to the needs of the gold miners who needed something tough and durable. The jeans material was found to be ideal for the purpose. The credit of starting a wholesale business of selling jeans goes to Leob Strauss or LEVI. However, it was the cowboy movies of 1930s with cowboys in jeans that took the popularity of denim jeans to new heights.

As the popularity of jeans increased, so did the competition. With the coming of 1940s, Levi started to feel the pressure from other players who wanted a share in the profitable jeans market. A new look was given to jeans by James Dean. Dean associated jeans with the rebellious characters he played in his classic 1950s movies, and thus the tag of rebellion got attached to Jeans. This became prominent when some schools in the U.S. would not allow students to wear jeans at school, as they thought it would amount to fanning rebellious behaviour. Naturally sales of jeans sky rocketed as teenagers were all too keen to be seen as rebels!

In the 60s and 70s colorful jeans took over the market. The jeans styles changed remarkably. Jeans acquired a completely new look. Sales and prices of jeans soared in the 1980s as the designers started putting in their label tags and promoting their brand names on denim jeans. Thus in a span of almost fifty years a piece of clothing which was meant to be worn by men at goldmines had acquired a status of designer wear and fashionable clothing.

The 1990's brought on a major change when the teenagers of this generation decided they did not want to wear the same style clothing their parents were still wearing. Denim never goes out of style but it did make a downturn for a while. Although it was great news for companies that made clothing like carpenters pants and khakis, because teenagers chose this style of clothing over the traditional denim jean.

Sale of traditional denim jeans were down but never out. Already in the "noughties" they have made a great comeback and are more popular than ever. Jeans have successfully withstood the test of time. Today we have designer jeans as well as the tough jeans that are both comfortable and fashionable. Moreover, they are available in such a wide range that it suits everybody's style and pocket.
